Angler Rat Lands A Big Ole Brown Trout
Matt and I take on The Driftless Area in search of brown trout!
Take in the breathtaking landscape and thrill of trout fishing
By Dylan Driessen
Our latest fishing trip was to the southwest corner of Wisconsin in search of brown trout. This part of Wisconsin is known as the "driftless area". The Driftless Area is a region of the Upper Midwest that covers parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. It is known for its unique geography and geology, which make it distinct from the surrounding plains and prairies. Unlike much of the Midwest, which was shaped by glacial activity during the last ice age, the Driftless Area was untouched by glaciers and therefore lacks the characteristic glacial drift or sediment that covers much of the region.
The area is characterized by rugged hills, bluffs, deep river valleys, and spring-fed streams. The landscape is the result of thousands of years of erosion and weathering of the underlying bedrock, which consists mainly of limestone and sandstone. This has created diverse landforms, including steep cliffs, narrow valleys, and limestone caves and sinkholes.
The Driftless Area is also home to a unique and diverse range of plant and animal species. Because it was never covered by ice, many plant and animal species were able to survive and evolve in the region. Today, the Driftless Area is home to a number of rare and endangered species.
In addition to its natural beauty, the Driftless Area is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The region is home to numerous state and local parks, as well as miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing streams and rivers, and scenic drives. Fishing streams located in this area are filled with brown trout, making this area very coveted by fly fishermen. Typically anglers will use spinners or spoons if they are using a standard rod as opposed to a fly fishing setup. Some of the most popular destinations in the area include the Great River Road, which follows the Mississippi River through the heart of the Driftless Area, and the Ice Age Trail, which passes through the region from Minnesota to Lake Michigan.
One of the best ways to experience the beauty and diversity of the Driftless Area is to take a scenic drive through the region. There are several designated scenic drives in the area, including the Wisconsin Great River Road and the Driftless Area Scenic Byway. These routes offer breathtaking views of the area's rugged hills and bluffs, as well as opportunities to explore small towns and villages along the way.
Whether you are a nature lover, an outdoor enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful scenery, the Driftless Area is a must-see destination in the Midwest. With its unique geology, diverse flora and fauna, and abundant recreational opportunities, it is an extraordinary place that should not be missed. Happy Fishing!
