How to Make Fresh Rainbow Trout: A Simple, Delicious Oven-Baked

April 30, 2025|Catch To Cook, How To, Trout Fishing

Wild River Trout Seasoning
Wild River Trout Seasoning

There’s nothing quite like cooking up a fresh-caught rainbow trout. Whether you reeled it in yourself from a cool northern river or picked it up from a local fish market, this simple recipe will bring out the best in your catch. It’s an easy, flavorful way to enjoy trout with minimal ingredients and maximum taste.

🐟 What You’ll Need:

Fresh rainbow trout (cleaned and gutted)

Tinfoil (for wrapping each fish individually)

Butter (sliced or in pats)

Wild river trout seasoning (or your favorite fish blend)

Potatoes (thinly sliced)

Onions (sliced into rings)

🔥 Step-by-Step Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Let it warm up for about 15 minutes while you prepare the ingredients.

Prepare the trout: Rinse the fish under cold water and pat dry. Make sure it’s been gutted and cleaned (you can leave the head on or remove it, depending on your preference).

Lay out a large piece of tinfoil for each fish. This will help lock in the flavor and moisture while cooking.

Layer in the flavor:

Lay the trout on top.

Place a few pats of butter inside the cavity of the trout and on top.

Sprinkle generously with wild river trout seasoning.

Wrap it up: Fold the tinfoil over the trout and crimp the edges to seal everything inside. Steaming the fish will infuse the flavors.

Bake at 400°F for 15–20 minutes, depending on the size of the fish. You’ll know it’s done when the fish flakes easily with a fork.

How To Video:

🍽️ Serving Tips:

Serve the trout straight from the foil for a rustic feel, or plate it with a wedge of lemon and some fresh herbs. This dish pairs beautifully with a light salad, roasted veggies, or a cold beer.

This oven-baked rainbow trout recipe is perfect for camping trips, backyard grills, or cozy dinners at home. It’s a celebration of fresh ingredients and simple cooking — just the way nature intended.

Do you catch your own trout or buy it fresh?
